How to Read a Bay in Ninety Seconds

A field habit for trade marketers who need a fast, honest read on shelf health before the next meeting.

Shopper selecting products from a store shelf

Ninety seconds is enough if you know what to look for. Start at eye level on the center of the bay, then sweep left and right for your brand block. Count facings only after you confirm the SKU is actually stocked — empty hooks and ghost tags inflate optimism.

Next, check adjacency. Who sits beside your hero SKU? A stronger brand can steal the glance; a weaker one can make you look premium if your packaging holds. Note price tag alignment and whether promo flashes still match the current offer.

Finish with secondary placements. Endcaps and baskets only count if they are filled and signed. Photograph one wide bay shot and one tight facing shot. That pair beats a paragraph of memory when you debrief later.

Teach this rhythm to every merchandiser. Consistency across stores is how visibility programs stop being anecdotes and start being comparable.
